Description
A significant part of the purpose of a hotel’s grand reception is the seamless creation of a favourable first impression, because these impressions contribute to an institution’s overall appeal.
As part of renovating Mövenpick Bur Dubai’s grand atrium, hotel management needed to commission a significant centrepiece sculpture to both brighten and energise the general ambience, while also being amenable to change according the specific requirements of many and varied private occasions.
An existing central water feature emerged as the ideal site, although, along with budgetary constraints, they needed an artwork that could be installed without drilling into the mosaicked cement foundations, and without altering the waterworks or system of encased optical lighting.
The artwork, furthermore, would need to exist as a standalone sculpture, while being able to harmoniously accommodate lavish botanical embellishments for weddings, conferences and other high-ticket events.
In consultation with hotel management, Todd Stuart conceived, manufactured and installed Organic Embrace: a work with adjustable legs that could slide in underneath the plumbing, and an upward tending form resembling a flaming five-petaled flower: a work unveiled to the delight of guests and clients alike, and a work that will live on in the memories of all visitors to the hotel.
